Week 13 – Baby has fingerprints!
Welcome to the second trimester!
Now the thought of being pregnant sinks in. It also is disheartening to know that in developing countries like India, young women find out that they are pregnant once they enter the 2nd trimester due to lack of awareness.
All the organs and structures of your baby which was formed in the first trimester continue to develop and function. You have successfully completed three months and both you and your baby crossed a milestone. Your baby is approximately the size of a pea-pod and weighs around 25-30 grams.
So, let’s summarize the main events that you will see in this week
The baby’s nose and lips are completely formed.
Veins are seen on your baby’s body through the thin and delicate skin.
All the organs and structures formed in the first trimester continue to develop and function. This week, organs like the thyroid, pancreas and gallbladder develop further.
As the baby’s excretory system continues to function, it can now form urine.
White blood cells which help the little one to fight infection after birth starts forming too.
Developmental Milestones Summary:
Fingerprints are formed. The body starts growing to catch up with the growth of the head that happened in the first trimester and the organs continue developing.
The baby’s body is well distinct. Sex organs are almost developed. But it will still be hard to determine the sex of the baby. In some cases, the developing veins can be seen through the delicate skin.
The baby now measures around 2.5-3 inches from crown to rump (CRL).
