Week 14 – Thumb sucking!
Welcome to the 14th week of your pregnancy. Your baby will start using his facial muscles now and suck his thumb. This is owing to the development of the nerve impulses which were developed at the end of the first trimester. The little one is a size of a nimbu/lemon and weighs around 35-40 grams. This week is crucial as your baby’s facial expressions keep developing.
So, let’s summarize the main events that you will see in this week
Apart from the baby’s facial expressions, the body grows faster than the head, separated by a distinct neck.
Ultra-fine hair known as “lanugo” start developing on the baby’s body.
Another major development that is seen is that the liver starts producing “bile” and the spleen starts producing red blood cells. Pancreas also start secreting “insulin” which helps in converting sugar to energy.
At the end of the 14th week, the baby’s arms grow to a length that’s proportionate to the rest of the body. The baby is active and flexible and moves his/her hand and feet, though you may still not feel the punches yet.
Your little one’s kidneys now start excreting urine into the amniotic fluid. This continues till birth.
Developmental Milestones Summary:
Facial expressions are formed! The baby starts sucking his thumb as well. The kidneys and brain increase their function.
The baby’s structure is clearly distinguished in the ultrasound this week. If you’re lucky you might get an image of the little one sucking its thumb.
The baby now measures around 31/2 to 4 inches from crown to rump (CRL).
