So, you have announced your pregnancy to the world. What next then? Celebrate the reveal – Indian style, hence you plan a “Godh Bharai”!
Well, what is a Godh Bharai?
A Godh Bharai, also known as a “baby shower”, is an auspicious occasion celebrated with near and dear ones, ushering the arrival of a new member into the household. The term “Godh Bharai” in its literal translation means filling the lap of an expectant mother (with abundance).
When and why is a Godh Bharai celebrated?
The tradition behind the celebrating a Godh Bharai is that elders and well-wishers bless the unborn baby and the expecting mother. Along with that, they welcome them onto this journey filled with joy and abundance.
Godh Bharai is celebrated in the last trimester of pregnancy and is eagerly awaited by the whole family, usually on the completion of the 7th month (when the baby and mommy are known to be in the “safe zone”). Some families have a puja after the baby is born in place of Godh Bharai in between.
Let’s see some ways you can put a twist on this tradition of Godh Bharai:
Godh Bharai is getting increasingly popular in recent times and a lot of couples go all out. They include their friends and family in creating and making memories in order to capture the whole journey of pregnancy! Here we have listed some ideas to make the whole Godh Bharai fun, trendy and filled with love.
- Have a low key intimate dinner with family and friends: You could book a dinner in your favorite place and fix a menu on your favorite food. This could be just with 5 to 10 people.
Go ALL OUT: Organize a party and invite the whole crowd. Your friends, family, your neighborhood, workmates and everyone in between. You can plan this in different ways that include:
- The traditional way
- Choosing a theme way
- A mix of both/A way that works for you two
The traditional way:
The traditional way is where in most instances your family elders chip in and help you celebrate the new member the arrival of your baby. This includes following the rituals and practices that have been followed by your family lineage.
Choosing a theme party:
You must have visited some party or another which is themed. So, be creative and think out of the box and plan a baby shower which you, your near and dear ones and your future baby will be happy being a part of! Here are some creative ideas for you:
- Disney’s prince & princess theme
- Mickey & Minnie theme
- Tropical theme
- Pink & blue theme
- Spring theme
- Baby theme
If you feel all this is overwhelming, given the digital age we live in, asking an event organizer to plan things for you makes it easier and peaceful. But that is purely upon you and your partner.
A mix of both/A way that works for you two:
You and your partner can celebrate in a way which works for you two. It could be anything that you have been planning to replicate; either seeing a previous party you attended, on T.V. or something you have been planning to do since childhood. You could even book a resort and have a 1-2 day event organized for your close friends and family. This way you can mix both family traditions like having a small puja along with having a fun-filled event the rest of the times.
These were a few suggestions that we have for your baby shower. We at Savika advise you to make the most out of these 9 months as it will pass in the blink of an eye. And while you’re at it, make memories along the way!
