Development – Week 12

Week 12 – Reflexes start!

As you enter your 12th week of pregnancy, your baby will start wriggling if you slightly nudge your abdomen. But, unfortunately, you will be unable to feel anything as of now! Your baby is a size of a small lime and weighs around 12-14 grams. The little one, as we saw in the last week, started moving around with delicate movements inside you. This week is crucial as your baby’s reflexes have formed.

So, let’s summarize the main events that you will see in this week

Apart from the baby’s fingers opening and closing – his toes start curling. Also, in this week, the baby’s eye muscles will clench and mouth starts making sucking movements.

Your baby’s face that you are dying to see is also forming. The eyes are now in the front of the head (move from the sides and reach here) and the ears are at their final position!

A lot of activity is happening within the brain as well. Your baby’s nerve cells are multiplied, and neural synapses being formed at a rapid rate.

Your little one’s intestines grow so fast, making it bulge into the umbilical cord. Within the abdominal cavity, the intestines will start to move, and the kidneys now start excreting urine into the bladder.

Developmental Milestones Summary:

Reflexes are formed! The baby starts looking more human. Organs, muscles, and bones continue forming as well.

 Ultrasound findings:

The baby’s fingers and toes can be clearly distinguished in the ultrasound this week. Facial bones and features are more prominent.
